How to Make Jewelry Boxes for Women

Jewelry boxes for women are gifts that will be cherished for a life time. In fact, if these boxes are handmade, they will be all the more treasured for the effort that has gone into making them.

A cardboard jewelry box can be made out of any of those boxes lying around to be recycled. You could use the empty box of a dinner set or even a shoe box. In addition, you will need a decorative looking chain and some jewelry pliers to work with as well.

The first thing you do is punch holes into the lid of the box. Then pass the chain through the holes in such a way that the inside of the lid has loops. Open the lid and measure the space inside your box.

Use two pieces of cardboard and fashion a divider for the inside of box. This can allow you to split the box in half or into four compartments. You can decorate the outside of the box in several ways.

One would be to create origami pieces and stick them all over the box. To give the box a stained glass kind of effect, cutting glass paper into several small bits of varying sizes and sticking them all over the box will give you the desired effect.

Wooden boxes are a bit sturdier in their construction. If you have some experience in working with wood, then this would be a good material to choose. Ideally you will have to sand the wood to remove anything uneven on it. A quarter inch thick of oak or cherry hardwood would do.

Apply two coats of acrylic paint to the outer surfaces of each of the cut pieces of wood. Allow enough time in between coats for them to dry. Once dry, create appliqué work out of newspaper pictures or old wall paper and paste this onto the box.

With woodworking glue, bring all the pieces of your wood together. Start by gluing the base into place. Once done, paste the sides together and then the lid. You can finish off the box by fixing a mirror onto the inside of the jewelry box lid.

You can also create a vintage style jewelry box as well. For this you will need an empty circular cheese box. Take off all the stickers on it and prime the surface of the lid and the sides of the box with primer. Paint over it with a metallic gold or silver paint and allow it time to dry.

In the meantime, cut out three circular bits of velvet cloth to fit into the inside of the lid and the box and the bottom of the box. Use some glue to put that in place. Cut out a vintage picture from a magazine to fit the outer surface of the lid and glue that in place.

Cover the base rim of the bottom part of the box in dark brown ribbon. String faux beads in white and silver on a thread and glue this thread around the picture on the lid. Fix a mirror into the lid of the box and voila, you are done.
